Non-violent Conflict Resolution through Forgiveness

St Angelas School, London
17 January 2008
“Good girls love bad boys.” Right? Well, yeah, but it’s wrong. That was at the core of Sergio’s message to you 1,200 young ladies. “When I took a young girl to prison to visit her daddy, I noticed a long line of women of all ages – and I had to think, Where are all the home boys that said ‘no matter what, I got your back; I’ll be there for you’?”

Sergio did a great job of highlighting the negative impact gangs have on girls, as well as guys. And our other speakers were especially happy about the way you listened and took in the central message: forgiveness is a stronger force than hate, non-violence is a smarter choice than retaliation…and life is worth living to its fullest.

I enjoyed the event immensely. I was happy to see something so positive, and our young people’s ability to relate to the message. I hope assemblies like this will be done in more schools in the borough, and further afield.

I was particularly touched and moved by the cardboard tombstones that were on display with the names and ages of the youth that have died to knife and gun crime. This showed me and the youth in attendance how real and serious are the times we are living in.
