Non-violent Conflict Resolution through Forgiveness
Breaking the Cycle - blog post

Emerson Park, Havering

29 June 2009

Thanks to all you year 7,8 and 10 students. It was great to talk to you and I hope you took something away from the stories of forgiveness you heard today. Like Glenn said, you will get out of life what you put in to it. Thanks to Michael and Sam for helping pack up.

If you have any questions or would like to tell us what you are thinking about what you heard today we would love to hear from you. All the best in the last weeks of school and have a fun safe summer.

Hi to everybody at Emerson Park and a big thank you to everybody who commented on our stories. When I tell my real-life story with the BTC team, I always aim to show you both sides of the coin. 1. the terrible injury i received after being attacked left me completely paralysed from below the chest. This filled me with hate towards the man that did this to me, which in turn led me in to a life of anger, resentment and frustration. It turned me into a prisoner within myself for the best part of ten years. I could not move on while I had all these feelings, it held me back in life. 2. By being able to forgive I was able to move forward and live a whole and very positive life even from a wheelchair. I’m a great believer in the saying you get out of life what you put into it. I am living proof that this really does work, take the positive path in life, and it will open up many doorways. All the best in life Glenn Fielder

Dear Glenn. I think that putting all your strength into forgiving rather than hating them for what they did was a very brave thing to do!

To Glenn And Kim, Thank you for sharing your life stories, we found them very interesting. It showed us what life is really like out there. We understand it must be hard to forget, but thats the right way to carry on with life. We think you are wonderful people how you could forgive and forget. We agree what you done was good but before your speech we dont know how we could if that ever happened to us. The facts that you told will stay with us through the rest of our lifes and thats why we thank you for coming to our school and telling us the real meaning of forgiveness.

Insightful. I had not considered this point of view before.

Two very sad stories. Both very courageous men. Made everyone in the assembly think. To tell 100+ kids in a hall a story like that must be difficult. Could possibly have changed some peoples views. Much appreciated
